INTERVIEW WITH MALU VOSS
Meet Malu Voss, Brazilian-born designer and founder of jewellery brand MALU VOSS. With an eye for details and her love for accessible luxury, she created a brand that empowers and makes women feel special. After having met and befriended so many women of different nationalities and cultures, Malu realised that regardless of their ethnicity or background, all women share the same desires: to be loved, understood, respected and to have access to beautiful things.
T: When did you discover your love of jewellery?
M: When I was six years old my father gave me a pair of gold earrings with an aquamarine stone. I was so happy and I felt so beautiful wearing those earrings. I believe that was the moment when I started loving jewellery. When I got my first job at the age of seventeen I started buying my own jewellery and in my spare time, I used to designed and create my own. Looking back I would not have imagined that in the future I would have my own brand.
T: What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?
M: I always dreamed of having my own company. I love the freedom to create, make decisions and the challenges we have to face every day as an entrepreneur.
T: What has been the single most important jewellery-making skill you’ve learned?
M: Knowing how to draw. It is essential to know how to put on paper the vision you have in your head.
T: How do you build a successful customer base?
M: The customer is very important, in my culture the customer is always right. It is necessary to treat them politely, honestly, and understand what their needs are.
T: You mentioned that your jewellery is inspired by the unique cultures and people around the world. What country played the main role in founding Malu Voss?
M: It was during a visit to the Kayan tribe (the women with a long necks) in Thailand that I was sure I should start a jewellery brand. Besides creating jewellery, my goal is to tell the stories of people and places through my creations.
T: Who would you most like to see wearing your jewellery?
M: I would love to see Olivia Palermo wearing my jewellery. I love her style and her personality.
T: If you were to write a book about yourself, how would you name it?
M: I always dreamed of writing a book. The title would probably be: The Lessons I Learned.
T: What advice would you give to a new creative entrepreneur?
M: The first piece of advice would be to start today, start with the tools you have and don’t stop in the face of difficulties.
